aharajah Transmission Towers (MTT) has commenced its operation in 1993 as a joint venture between Sun power Systems (Pvt) Ltd, a Sri Lankan Company and Sipson Investment Ltd a Hong Kong based investment company. MTT is the only private sector organization, approved and licensed by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) to operate an integrated microwave and optical fiber transmission network in Sri Lanka.

MTT has invested over US$ 25 million in building an extensive digital microwave transmission network and communication infrastructure facilities across central, southern and western Sri Lanka covering over 80% of the Island. It has also deployed Narrowband and Broadband Wireless Access Network using TDMA/CDMA/FDMA technologies operating at 3.5 GHz and
10.5 GHz. Its ATM, Frame Relay and IP transmission backbone provides high-speed voice, data & multimedia and Internet access to small and medium enterprises as well as large corporate customers.

1.2 Island wide coverage

MTT’s Microwave and Data Communication network covers almost 80% of the Island. The above Figure shows the basic layout of operational sites and proposed sites. All the sites are equipped with safe AC power with backup generator facilities and battery backup, 24hr security, round-the-clock remote monitoring of services from Central Network Operations Center and on the site Technicians to attend any defaults.

MTT’s Functional structure is as shown in above Chart 1.4 and its all operational activities are directed by CEO Mr. Jayantha Samarakoon.

            All the marketing and administration activities are handled at the Head Office and all the technical aspects are handled by the Engineering Office located at Kotikawatha.

I was posted to the Engineering Office under the supervision of Eng Chanaka Liyanage (Manager Access Networks) and involved in Troubleshooting faults in Base Stations & Customer sites, Monitoring the Network in Control Center, New radio Installations, New antenna installations, Testing of faulty Equipments, Router Configuration, Data Network Configuration, DNS Server Configuration, Web & Wap Server Deployment.
